I’m a fan of the TV programme Foyle’s War and I recall one episode featuring a pole selector – a woman who spent her working life in the forest finding suitable trees for pit props and the like. I wish I had her expertise. Autumn colours are an absolute joy and the other day I came across this russet gem sparkling in the sunshine against a clear azure sky. However, I was at a loss to put a name to it. Maple, plane, cedar? Any suggestions?
